7. Events and Charities we support

CHRISTMAS TOY APPEAL Each year at Christmas 107.5 Sovereign Radio encourages listeners to buy an extra toy for those children in the area who are less fortunate than others, those in care or with special needs. Last Christmas Toys were collected at 3 main venues including our studios, the Salvation army Building Eastbourne and Wessons Café in Horam, home of the Sovereign Motorcycle club. Hundreds of toys were collected and delivered to the Salvation Army in Eastbourne for distribution to the needy children within the Sovereign Radio's transmission area. The tradition and spectacle continued when all the toys are delivered via the annual "Toy Run "when up to 50 members of the Sovereign Motorcycle Club rode their suitably Christmas festooned bikes in convoy through the town dressed as Santa Claus and many other Festive characters.

QUICKEN TRUST is a charity based in Hailsham which works in Uganda to provide a better lifestyle to the people there. Landlocked Uganda sits across the equator. Its population is around 23 million a country racked with AIDS and so poor it was recognised by the government as meriting special financial help through the Millennium Gift Aid programme in 2000. Over a million children have been orphaned because their parents have died of AIDS or HIV. Some have one parent remaining, although in most cases this parent is also ill with AIDS or the HIV virus with only a short amount of life left to live and a large family to bring up and support. Sovereign Radio has been involved with the trust since its inception and listeners have responded generously to several specific appeals and its ongoing fundraising efforts. In Dec 2005 we were visited by a group of orphans from Kabubbu where several major projects have already been started. By way of tribute the children sung a Christmas carol for us live on air.

8. Coverage Highlights

CHALLENGE ROK on 107.5 Sovereign Radio. This year we have undertaken the modernisation of Jumping Beans nursery/ pre-school in Eastbourne. This ongoing relationship with ROK gives a chance for a local charity to have a makeover done in one day for their premises. This year we had a record number of worthy entrants however the competition was won by Jumping Beans Nursery.

AIRBOURNE Without doubt Eastbourne's largest event of the year is as spectacular as ever with the likes of the Incredible Red Arrows, the Falcon parachute team and Classic World war II planes all flying over the seafront. Hundreds of thousands of visitors make the journey from all over the South of England to see the Country's biggest free air show. 107.5 Sovereign Radio Broadcasted live updates and interviews from the Seafront for the full 4 days. We spoke to pilots, ground staff, organisers and visitors alike. On the Saturday and Sunday we also took to the air and broadcast from The Sovereign Radio outside Broadcast unit. The Sovereign Radio team and our mascot the Sovereign Squirrel all joined in the fun on the seafront amongst the thousands of people enjoying another successful Airbourne.

SAVE the DGH We support the cross party SAVE the DGH campaign which was created to campaign against the closure of Eastbourne District General Hospitals Maternity unit. We are actively involved in meetings and provide PA systems and presenters for many of the marches. We are highly visible throughout the campaign and can be seen marching with our banners and supporting the hospital at most of the rallies.
